Common Causes

  • Low oil level, dirty oil, wrong viscosity, sludge, or restricted oil passage
  • Camshaft actuator solenoid stuck, clogged screen, or poor oil control
  • Open, shorted, corroded, or oil-contaminated VVT solenoid connector or harness
  • Camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, or correlation problem
  • Stretched timing chain, worn guides, weak tensioner, slipped timing, or phaser issue
  • PCM control fault only after oil, circuit, command, and mechanical timing checks pass

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Check oil level, oil condition, viscosity, service history, and sludge before replacing VVT parts

  3. Command the VVT solenoid with a scan tool where supported and compare desired versus actual cam angle
  4. Check solenoid resistance, power, ground, and control signal for circuit codes
  5. If timing performance codes return, inspect cam/crank correlation, timing chain stretch, phaser movement, and oil pressure
  6. Verify repair with hot idle, road test, commanded cam movement, and no pending timing codes
