Engine Vibration

Common Sounds or Signs

  • Shaking at idle in gear
  • Vibration changes when A/C turns on
  • Engine rocks during reverse/drive engagement
  • Vibration follows RPM more than road speed

Quick Checks

  • Scan for misfire, fuel-trim, and idle-control codes before inspecting mounts only
  • Check misfire counters and cylinder contribution at hot idle
  • Inspect engine and transmission mounts for collapse, fluid leaks, separation, or contact
  • Disable accessory loads briefly where safe to see whether vibration changes
  • Separate road-speed vibration from engine-RPM vibration during road test

  • Review P0300-family codes and misfire counters
  • Compare fuel trims and idle speed control
  • Inspect plugs, coils, injectors, and vacuum leaks

If combustion is smooth, inspect mounts and accessory loads under the condition that creates vibration.

  • Power-brake lightly where safe and inspect mount movement
  • Check mount collapse or metal-to-metal contact
  • Inspect belt, tensioner, and accessory drag
